11th OCTOBER 2011 – Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) today launched the SMART PARTNERSHIP program with AIROD. This will enable both parties to collaborate with each other in providing aircraft engineering and maintenance support for all RMAF aircraft serviced by AIROD. The SMART PARTNERSHIP program was officially launched by Tan Sri Rodzali Daud, Chief of The Royal Malaysian Air Force and witnessed by Tan Sri Dato’ Ahmad Johan, the Executive Chairman of National Aerospace & Defence Industries Sdn Bhd (NADI), the Holding Company of AIROD.

“The RMAF/AIROD SMART PARTNERSHIP program is a win-win formula that will see an increase of aircraft availability and readiness for RMAF to carry out its operational duties. It is also an opportunity for RMAF to upgrade the skills of their human resources through training provided by AIROD. For AIROD, this partnership will translate to quicker decision making process that will reduce and eventually eliminate waste”, said Tan Sri Rodzali in his opening address.

“We are excited with this launch as it has two major outcomes. The first outcome is being able to reinforce and optimize our resources in supporting the RMAF, and the second outcome is unleashing our capability and capacity to scale up the global MRO market”, said YBhg Tan Sri Ahmad Johan.

The Government of Malaysia through its Economic Transformation Programme (ETP) has identified the MRO Industry has a key Entry Point Project (EPP) to increase the Gross National Income (GNI) by USD 4.2 billion and creation of 20,700 new jobs by year 2020. AIROD as one of the main players in the MRO industry in the country has taken this challenge head on by identifying strategic partners to collaborate and harness existing synergy already available in the country.

The EPP1 launch has resulted in the signing of the General Terms Agreement (GTA) between Malaysia Airlines System Berhad (MAS) and AIROD on 20th July 2011. The GTA will enable the two main MRO players in Malaysia to optimize use of skilled manpower and resources to enable MAS to focus on wide body aircraft MRO and AIROD on the narrow body MRO. With the two companies working in tandem focusing in their respective strength and markets, the Government’s aspirations of improving the GNI through jobs creation will be a reality.

The smart partnership between RMAF and AIROD will bring the optimal use of human capital and exploring new areas of synergy to the next level for the benefit of the country as a whole. This smart partnership is in fact a continuation of sound policies drafted by our past leaders that wish to achieve self- reliant in matters related to the country’s defense. Taking cue from current national leadership’s much promoted Blue Ocean Strategy, the smart partnership program will embrace the elements of reducing and eliminating waste, to create and recognizing opportunities. The program started with 15 RMAF personnel attached to AIROD involved in tear down inspection (TDI) of Nuri M23-03. This program will be further developed into a more organized, systematic relationship, whereby RMAF personnel will be given more training by AIROD to further upgrade their skills and knowledge, and employment at AIROD after their service contracts with RMAF ends, as and when situation permits. With their vast knowledge and experience in military aircraft, AIROD will be able to continue providing excellent maintenance services to RMAF , maintaining the strategic relationship with RMAF and the Government for many years to come, notwithstanding AIROD’ s future activities in the commercial MRO.

AIROD has been given the approval to operate the MRO in the New Kunming International airport, China’s 4th largest Airport and a strategic gateway to China. A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed on 31st July 2011 between AIROD & Reignwood to form a Joint Venture Company to support Yunnan’s People Government in their fast growing MRO industry in preparation for the completion of the airport in December 2011. By tapping into China’s huge MRO market, this represents a strategic opportunity for Malaysia to become a world leader in MRO services.

MAS and Airod will also explore and evaluate future business opportunities, in relation to the expertise sharing, and develop it into a profitable and viable business model.

MAS executive vice-president for engineering and maintenance Mohd Roslan Ismail said the coming together of the two leading local maintenance, repair and overhoul (MRO) organisations will not only strengthen the capacity and capability of the local MRO industry but also position Malaysia as a leading global MRO service provider.

“We are glad to share our expertise with Airod and, at the same time, tap its skills in order to improve our competitiveness in the market,” he said.

The two companies have a total manpower of 6,400, and their collaboration will allow them to handle 64 wide-body and 364 narrow-body aircraft heavy maintenance visits per year from global aircraft manufacturers such as Boeing, Airbus and ATR.
